Mighty Switch Force! 2 Think On Your Feet

Mighty Switch Force! 2: Think On Your Feet

If you’ve played the first Mighty Switch Force!, you’ll know what to expect from Wayforward’s first ever sequel in the Mighty franchise. Like the first game, your primary tool is the Siren Helmet, which lets you phase blocks in and out of existence with the press of a button. You’ll need to strategically wield this helmet to traverse each stage; except this time, you’re here to save the Hooligan Sisters, not incarcerate them.

Additionally, Patricia Wagon’s turned in her badge and laser pistol for a Planet Land Fire Brigade suit and Infinity Dousing Apparatus (Or, you know, hose. Whichever you prefer).

Officer Wagon’s less destructive arsenal leads the game to promote a “progression through suppression” model—that is to say, the puzzles rely more on effective timing and level architecture than rapidly firing the laser pistol to clear the path ahead. New equipment means new puzzles—some old, some familiar.  Among the new ones in Mighty Switch Force! 2 are water redirection puzzles.

Mighty Switch Force! 2: Think On Your Feet

In some areas, you’ll be able to shoot water through certain blocks to reach areas that house sponge-like enemies carrying a Hooligan Sister, or to wash away blocks that are simply in your way. To make it more challenging (and I mean more challenging), some of these blocks will correspond with different colors you have to lock in or out of existence in order to redirect the water properly. If you don’t think ahead, some areas of Mighty Switch Force! 2 will keep you busy scratching your head for up to ten minutes.

Mighty Switch Force! 2 introduces you to old mechanics like blocks you can lock into existence by standing on them much earlier than the original does—but there’s a cruel twist: instead of two colors of blocks, you now have three to work with. There were parts, especially in Incident 0.13, that depend on making the correct assessments from the beginning of the stage. One misstep and you’ll have to trek all the way back to a block of a given color to reset the puzzle. This element in particular was so strong in Switch Force! 2 that I’d happily say it was the primary focus of its puzzle element, or at least the most challenging aspect.

Mighty Switch Force! 2: Think On Your Feet

These elements only seem to make the game a rehash of Mighty Switch Force! if you’re casually playing through the stages, but when you can really start to feel the game’s changes is when you start trying to beat each stage’s par time. Mighty Switch Force! 2 is built around the time attack concept, even more so than its predecessor. That, along with hidden “Ugly Secret Babies” (which I’d look for just to see Patty apathetically punt it to safety), gave it more replay value. Oh, there are unlockables, too—but I won’t spoil them for you.

(That’d be like looking up the video of Samus removing her power suit at the end of Metroid if you were stuck on Mother Brain—in more ways than one.)

Of course, no Mighty Switch Force! game would be complete without the accompaniment of an outstanding soundtrack by Jake “Virt” Kaufman. Truth be told, the music featured in Mighty Switch Force! heavily influenced my decision to pick up a 3DS. Even if some levels in the sequel aren’t as stellar or striking as they were in the first Mighty Switch Force! game, the music made every incident worth looking forward to.  With the Mighty Switch Force 2 album now sitting at number one on Bandcamp, it’s easy for me to say that the games’ stellar musical arrangement is the Midas touch that makes the game a little golden nugget in your 3DS library. After all, who doesn’t want Rescue Girl blazing from their 3DS in every public situation?

The soundtrack is great on its own, but when paired with the vibrant, masterfully animated world of Mighty Switch Force!, the passively flirtatious personality of Patty Wagon, and the charmingly aloof Hooligan Sisters, it forms a truly mutually exclusive experience. The game creates a fitting world for the music, and the music forms a fitting backdrop for the world.

Mighty Switch Force! 2 is short, sweet, and to the point. It doesn’t spend as much time introducing you to new puzzles as it does elaborating on the elements that made the first Mighty Switch Force! such a strong platformer, but that shouldn’t detract from the games arguable improvements that make it a yummy, bit(e)-size experience.

Food For Thought:

1. You don’t have to grab the Ugly Secret Baby to get a par time—you can do both separately.

2. With the lock-blocks, remember that whatever you’re standing on won’t phase into the background if you use the Siren Helmet. This will make your experience much, much more fluid.

3. Mighty Switch Force! 2 is a great way to make frustration feel rewarding.

4. If I haven’t said it enough already, consider purchasing the Mighty Switch Force! 2 soundtrack on Bandcamp. Kaufman delivered his promise to make the instrument stems available for remixing due to its success, so if you’re into that, go and try it out!

6. Despite being a $5.99 eshop title, Mighty Switch Force! seemed to garner enough of a following that the expectations for its sequel were more akin to a full-fledged game than a short one. That says something about the potential of Wayforward’s new IP.

7. Beautiful sprite work and an amazing supporting soundtrack makes me dream up a world where Capcom has entrusted Mega Man to Wayforward and Jake Kaufman. Capcom seems to have pressed the “retro trophy” stamp on the blue bomber’s profile, restricting him to making special cameos instead of having fully devoted titles. They trusted Wayforward with DuckTales, which looks phenomenal, so maybe they’ll come to and let them baby another one of their games?

Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses

It's been a tough weekend for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its players, or at least for those of us in the NA / EU regions. The early access launched on Friday, August 24th and was riddled with emergency maintenance and server connection issues (error 90000, error 3102, error 1017 anyone?).

(Note: last chance on pre-order items at 20% off).

Things haven't gotten much better with one day until the official launch date. Login restrictions are now in place, and the game producer/director Naoki Yoshida is apologizing to NA/EU gamers for the server issues.

Having said that, the game is now officially live in Japan, and it appears that most non-preorder 1.0 players are reporting successful login to their respective region's servers.

If you're still on the fence about buying FFXIV: ARR, note that today is the last chance to get exclusive pre-order in-game items from the Standard Edition and Collector's Edition. The Digital versions of both editions are $24 and $40 respectively after the coupon for  FFXIV. Check out screenshots on some of the items below.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses

In-game items for the Standard Edition include:

- Mog Cap Moogle-themed hat

- Cait Sith Doll minion

- Early access (hmm')

The Digital Collector's Edition includes all the above plus:

- Helm of Light in-game helmet

- Baby Behemoth Minion

- Coeurl Mount

- Behemoth Barding armor for your chocobo

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Early Access Problems, Last Chance On Bonuses

While having early access as a benefit to pre-ordering may seem like a moot point right now, you will actually have a grace period (until August 30) to enter the retail code in your account. This means you'll actually get 3 additional free days of game time before the first 30 days kicks in after entering the retail game code.

Helpful Tip: If you accidentally claimed your pre-order/early access code on the WRONG account, you have a one-time chance to fix the error and transfer your pre-order bonus items into the proper account.

Account management should also be A LOT easier once all access is streamlined through Mog Station, which will be fully functional sometime mid-September. You'll be able to do things like input pre-order bonus codes, request world transfers, and handle subscription services there.

Syndicate Wars Creator Making Cyberpunk Spiritual Successor, Satellite Reign

'

'

Electronic Arts’ recent Syndicate FPS was nothing like the original Syndicate series of tactical games. Disappointed by the title, the producer of the second game in the series, Syndicate Wars, has been working on a spiritual successor to the series, titled Satellite Reign.

'

Satellite Reign is described as a “real-time, class-based strategy game” and is being developed by 5 Lives Studios. The game takes place in a dystopian, cyberpunk setting, and you control four agents—each with their own unique abilities—battling for control of the city, and hoping to overthrow the mega-corporation in charge.

'

What makes Satellite Reign unique, they say, is that the city “actually functions like a city,” which is something the development team hopes will give rise to emergent gameplay. The streets are bustling with people, information and finances make their way across different parts of the city, power grids control the flow of power, and so on. The studio hopes to create a game that will allow you to use all of this to your advantage, by hacking, modifying, fighting and so on.

'

Syndicate Wars Creator Making Cyberpunk Spiritual Successor, Satellite Reign

There’s no linear structure to the game either, they claim. “The city is huge and you can move around and tackle objectives however you want to,” the studio’s description of the choices you’ll be afforded reads. “You won't be spoon-fed one mission after another, you'll be able to use whatever means you can to get to your final goal. Bribe scientists to advance your technologies, and kidnap doctors to augment your agents. Steal money from the banks to fund your war against the corporations, and exploit neural implants to bend the will of others.”

'

Mike Diskett, who served as producer and lead programmer on Syndicate Wars, is spearheading the game. Says Diskett: “A lot of Syndicate fans, including myself, got our hopes up when we a heard a new Syndicate game in development. But in the end, it turned out to be nothing like the original games. So I decided to take it upon myself to deliver what the fans really wanted.”

'

5 Lives Studios have erected a Kickstarter campaign to ask for support for Satellite Reign, with a goal of £350,000 over the next month. You can watch their Kickstarter pitch above and find more information on the game here. Satellite Reign is being developed using Unity for PC, Mac and Linux.

Apollo And Athena Investigate A Murder In An Ace Attorney Dual Destinies Trailer

A second trailer for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies out of Comic-Con shows investigation mode gameplay, demonstrating how the game's jump to 3D models affect investigations. Check it out below:

Athena mentions a 'giant bird monster' and that room looks awfully familiar, so this case is probably from the game's Nine-Tales case.

The Wonderful 101 Will Launch With Just 30,000 Copies In Japan

The Wonderful 101 Will Launch With Just 30,000 Copies In Japan

Japanese retail blog Sinobi has shared that it appears Nintendo will be shipping about 30,000 copies of The Wonderful 101 for the game’s launch in Japan.

As you can probably tell, that isn’t a large number—certainly not the figure you would expect of a high-profile Wii U exclusive—and doesn’t indicate good things about how much Nintendo expect the game to sell.

In a way, it makes sense—after all, The Wonderful 101 is a complicated game to explain. Hopefully, the game finds a larger audience over in the west.

Activision Reveals Mysterious Origins Trailer for Black Ops II

Activision and Treyarch have released a rather strange trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Called 'Origins,' it is not clear what exactly is going on in the short trailer. It isn't clear if the trailer is announcing new content for the game, instead only delivering close-ups on grim looking men and some grainy footage of someone running through an area being riddled with gunfire. There are also brief glimpses of what appears to be abandoned rooms.

The line in the trailer reads : 'Every story has a beginning ' and an end ''

The most surprising part of the trailer is right at the end, where the camera pans up to reveal a giant robot preparing to stomp on the camera ' something that immediately brought up memories of The Iron Giant and Pacific Rim.

Check out the trailer below and be sure to add your thoughts in the comments section:

Aksys will be attending E3 in just a few weeks and they're bringing two brand new games to show. These games will be playable during the show. Either BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma and/or Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN – in June.

Muramasa Rebirth for PlayStation Vita and A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda EX (pictured above) for Xbox Live Arcade will also be playable. Oh, and Aksys also has a mobile title to reveal. They released a Double Dragon game for iOS two years back.

Blizzards Project Titan May Be a Non-Subscription MMORPG

Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Morhaime offered some news behind project Titan, the next MMORPG behind the studios that brought us World of Warcraft.

During an investor call, Morhaim told investors the company is 'in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be.'

He also noted that the game is 'unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG.' Morhaime went on by mentioning the game has no projected release date at this point.

Beyond that, Morhaime revealed some members of Titan's development team have been reassigned to World of Warcraft and Blizzard All-Stars.
